Residential addresses belong to real internet subscriptions and look like homes. The trade is price and speed against how the address is scored, and the right answer depends entirely on whether an account is involved.
What actually distinguishes them?
Ownership of the address block. Datacenter IPs are allocated to hosting providers, and those allocations are public — anyone can check which organisation an address belongs to and conclude that a shopper browsing from a server rack is unusual. Why is bandwidth billing the real cost driver?
Datacenter proxies are typically sold per address per month regardless of usage, so heavy work costs the same as light work. Residential proxies are usually metered, which means an image-heavy marketplace workflow can cost several times what a message-checking workflow costs on the same account count.
Measure gigabytes per account per month before choosing a plan. The difference between 2 GB and 10 GB per account is usually larger than any saving from choosing a cheaper tool elsewhere in the stack.
When is datacenter the right choice?
When no account is at risk and volume matters: monitoring public prices, checking whether pages render, sampling availability. Being identified as a datacenter visitor has no consequence when there is nothing to suspend, and the speed and flat pricing are genuine advantages.

Where do ISP proxies fit?
ISP proxies — sometimes called static residential — are addresses registered to a consumer provider but hosted in a datacentre. They look residential to a lookup while behaving with datacentre speed and stability, and they are billed per address rather than per gigabyte. For logged-in account work they are frequently the best fit, since a session that never changes address is exactly what a real household produces.
How does a site know which is which?
By looking it up. Every IP range is registered to an organisation, and those registrations are public, so a lookup tells a site whether an address belongs to a hosting company or to a consumer internet provider. The check takes 1 database query and no client-side script at all.
Commercial IP-intelligence services go further, adding a risk score, a usage type and a history of abuse reports per address. A site running 1 of those products knows the category of your connection before the page finishes loading, which is why the address type matters more than any fingerprint setting.
How should you decide?
Ask one question: would losing this account cost more than the proxy price difference. If yes, use residential or ISP addresses and match timezone and language to them. If no, use datacenter and keep the money.
Whichever you choose, test the address before committing volume to it. An address that already returns frequent challenges has a damaged reputation from previous users, and no amount of profile configuration repairs that — the fastest fix is a different address, and retiring the bad one permanently rather than rotating back to it later.
